The diocesan Catholic Schools Office is accepting nominations for the annual Catholic school leadership awards. Winners will be honored at the Oct. 11 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools, which is returning to the diocese after a short hiatus.
Oakley Hoch, a first grader at Sacred Heart School in Sioux City, had one of the best days she has had in a very long time. Oakley has not seen her father since May 2025, when he was deployed. During her classroom Valentine’s Day celebration, she was surprised by his return home.
St. Mary’s Catholic School announced its Fund-A-Cause project for this year’s Ball and Charity Auction in early January. Since then, generous donors have stepped forward to support the much-needed renovation of the community gym entrance and first floor of the high school. To date, $579,060 has been committed toward the $1.5 million project, with additional donors actively being pursued so construction can be completed this summer.
Remsen St. Mary School received a $150,000 contribution from Wells Enterprises towards the We Believe ... Our Faith, Our Family, Our Future building project. A check was presented in January by Wells at the high school to Father Tim Pick, pastor; Barry Galles, board president and Kim Phillips, principal.

Bishop John E. Keehner announced today that Patty Lansink, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Sioux City, has resigned her position effective Feb. 27. She has accepted a regional vice president position with FACTS Education Solutions out of Lincoln, Nebraska.

After nearly a four-year absence, the major diocesan fundraiser for Catholic schools is returning to the Diocese of Sioux City, with a few changes to involve a wider group.
Due to inclement weather on Jan. 21, the Diocesan Honor Band has been postponed to Jan. 28. It will be held at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City.
Storm Lake St. Mary's High School announced the 2026 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees who will be honored Jan. 23 between the homecoming games vs. Manson Northwest Webster. The 2026 inductees: Bill McCoy, Class of 1968, the 1984 Softball Team, Abby (Richardson) Jacobson, Class of 2007, and Panther of Honor, Pete Laven.
As the diocese gears up for Briar Cliff Sunday on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, the focus is on a Briar Cliff graduate. Elise Mangan, former Bishop's Scholar, is a product of both Kuemper High School and Briar Cliff University. Now she serves as a language arts educator in a diocesan Catholic school.
