Preparing for election day: 'non-negotiables'/'no negociables'

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
 
"We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern."

As we near the general election day on Nov. 5, we find ourselves in an increasingly divided nation and in many cases, a divided church. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the Iowa Catholic Conference (ICC – the public policy voice of the Iowa Catholic bishops) distribute materials to help Catholics cast votes with informed consciences.
 
The USCCB Office of Justice and Peace offers a wide variety of resources in English and Spanish at usccb.org including Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States.
 
The ICC distributes bulletin inserts and other resources in English and Spanish to the four Iowa dioceses and parishes to help Catholics make informed voting decisions. We have sent these to pastors who have requested them. A list of legislative principles and concerns is available at iowacatholicconference.org.
 
As the shepherd of this diocese, it is my responsibility to instruct each of the faithful about the church’s teachings. Around election time, the faithful often request that I reprint my earlier letter on the “non-negotiables” of the Catholic faith as it pertains to politics and policies of candidates running for office at all levels of government. 

 As disciples of Jesus Christ, supporting any of these social evils, including by voting for those who champion them, would be incompatible with our faith and our hope for salvation. Here they are:
 

• Abortion – The deliberate killing of the most innocent and defenseless of all human beings, the child in the womb, remains the single most grievous and corrosive evil in our midst. Euphemisms about “choice” and “reproductive rights” cannot hide what abortion actually is: child murder. Not only are we still killing one million children a year in our country, which is already appalling enough, but to accept that one class of human beings can have their humanity denied and their right to life removed at the stroke of a pen, puts every right and every person at risk.
• Euthanasia – The deliberate killing of the elderly, the very ill and the mentally ill is increasingly common. Appeals to “mercy” and “dignity” try to hide the murder actually taking place. There is an enormous difference between allowing a life to end naturally while offering “palliative care,” and causing that life to end.
• Embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning and IVF treatments – Another result of abortion’s fundamental injustice, these practices likewise treat unborn human beings as nothing more than laboratory material, to be created, used and disposed of however we will, without regard to the child’s humanity. Fortunately, stem cells can be collected ethically, for example from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood, and these alternatives have consistently proved better for actual therapeutic use than embryonic stem cells. Likewise, the push for human cloning seems to have muted at the moment, although accepted versions of it remain used in “in vitro” fertilization techniques, which are morally unacceptable.
• Infringements upon religious freedom – Globally, this is a huge issue. In our country, it crops up in unexpected places, such as health care (we must preserve conscientious objection to being forced to participate in or pay for unethical practices, including abortion) and education (we must defend the right of religious schools to hire their own teachers and school choice for parents).
• Racism – Prejudice or hatred toward persons or a class of people, based only on skin color or ethnic heritage, still causes harm in our society. Although we have spent decades striving to root out this evil we have made much progress but there is still more to do, as recent events clearly demonstrate. 

Please take time to educate yourself and form your own conscience before casting your ballot. Our faith must be our guide and our inspiration. Please continue to pray fervently for our troubled world and all who suffer in it.
 
I continue to heal after my ankle replacement surgery. I am most grateful for your prayers and well-wishes during my recuperation.

Las insinuaciones sobre la "elección" y los "derechos reproductivos" no pueden ocultar lo que realmente es el aborto: el asesinato de un niño. No sólo seguimos matando a un millón de niños al año en nuestro país, lo que ya es bastante espantoso, sino que aceptar que a una clase de seres humanos se le puede negar su humanidad y quitarle su derecho a la vida de un plumazo, pone en peligro a todos los derechos y a todas las personas.

2) Eutanasia: el asesinato deliberado de ancianos, enfermos graves y enfermos mentales es cada vez más común. El llamado a la "misericordia" y a la "dignidad" tratan de ocultar el asesinato que se está llevando a cabo. Hay una enorme diferencia entre permitir que una vida termine naturalmente mientras se ofrecen "cuidados paliativos" y hacer que esa vida termine.
 
3) Investigación con células madre de embriones, clonación humana y tratamientos de FIV – Otro resultado de la injusticia fundamental del aborto, estas prácticas también tratan a los seres humanos no nacidos como nada más que material de laboratorio, para ser creado, utilizado y desechado como queramos, sin tener en cuenta la humanidad del niño. Afortunadamente, las células madre pueden obtenerse de forma ética, por ejemplo, de la médula ósea y la sangre del cordón umbilical, y estas alternativas han demostrado sistemáticamente ser mejores para el uso terapéutico que las células madre de un embrión. Del mismo modo, el impulso a la clonación humana parece haber disminuido en este momento, aunque las versiones aceptadas de la misma siguen utilizándose en técnicas de fertilización "in vitro", que son moralmente inaceptables. 

4) Violaciones de la libertad religiosa – A nivel mundial, este es un gran problema. En nuestro país, surge en lugares inesperados, como la atención médica (debemos preservar la objeción de conciencia a ser obligado a participar o pagar por prácticas poco éticas, incluido el aborto) y la educación (debemos defender el derecho de las escuelas religiosas a contratar a sus propios maestros y la elección de escuela para los padres). 

5) Racismo: el prejuicio o el odio hacia las personas o una clase de personas, basado únicamente en el color de la piel o la herencia étnica, sigue causando daño en nuestra sociedad. A pesar de que hemos pasado décadas esforzándonos por erradicar este mal, hemos avanzado mucho, pero aún queda mucho por hacer, como lo demuestran claramente los acontecimientos recientes. 
 
Por favor, tómese el tiempo para informarse y formar su propia conciencia antes de emitir su voto. Nuestra fe debe ser nuestra guía y nuestra inspiración. Por favor, continúen orando fervientemente por nuestro mundo atribulado y por todos los que sufren en él. 
Continúo sanando después de mi cirugía de reemplazo de tobillo. Estoy muy agradecido por sus oraciones y buenos deseos durante mi recuperación.
