Pilgrimage opportunities, Mass of Welcome, holy day

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
 
I recently had the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Ireland with a group for whom I served as spiritual director and chaplain.  It was a wonderful experience during which we visited sites associated with Sts. Patrick, Brigid, Colmcille, Oliver Plunkett, and Kevin as well as the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock.  
 
But I am reminded, as I join members of our deacon community this coming Saturday at the Grotto in West Bend, that we do not need to travel across the ocean in order to make a meaningful pilgrimage during this Jubilee of Hope.  We have two beautiful pilgrimage sites in our own Diocese of Sioux City—the Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend and Trinity Heights in Sioux City.  
 
Indeed, for those who can travel no further, a visit to our own parish church can be a pilgrimage of hope in which we lay before the Lord our hopes, our dreams, and also those fears and burdens which weigh us down in this world.  I encourage each of you to make some sort of pilgrimage over the coming months in which you offer up to the Lord the gift of your very selves, with the confidence that such a gift is never offered in vain.  The Lord always graciously receives us and gives us back much more than that for which we could ever hope.
 
I am a great fan of county fairs and would often spend time at the Mahoning County Fair in Canfield, Ohio, near my home.  And so, I was very happy to have had the opportunity last Friday to visit the Woodbury County Fair.  Thanks to Father Michael Erpelding and the members of the Moville Immaculate Conception community, part of the Parish of Saints Isidore and Maria, for their hospitality and great pie I was able to enjoy at their parish stand amid my visits to the livestock barns and tractor displays.
 
I also want to remind you of the last of our diocesan welcome Masses, opportunities for me to meet you as your bishop.  I have enjoyed the Welcome Masses I celebrated in Fort Dodge in June and Storm Lake in July as opportunities to meet many of the faithful of the Diocese, men and women, young and old.  
 
If you have not yet been able to join with other members of the diocesan church, please consider joining us this coming Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City at 5:30 p.m.  Mass will be followed by a festival reception featuring ethnic foods, music and dancing presented by members of the Cathedral Parish community.  
 
Finally, please remember that this coming Friday, Aug. 15, is the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation.  This important solemnity is in many ways, the celebration of our Christian Hope, a reminder to us of the glory that awaits us members of God’s faithful people, as we celebrate that our Blessed Mother Mary was assumed into heaven body and soul, where she enjoys the fullness of God’s abiding presence and intercedes for us.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, 

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de hacer una peregrinación a Irlanda con un grupo al que sirvo como guía espiritual y capellán.  Fue una experiencia maravillosa, en la cual pudimos visitar lugares asociados con los santos Patricio, Brígida, Columba, Oliver Plunkett, y Kevin, así como también el Santuario de nuestra Señor de Knock. 

Este próximo sábado me reuniré con diacones de la comunidad en la Gruta de la Redención, en West Bend, lo cual me recuerda que no es necesario viajar al otro lado del océano para participar en una peregrinación significativa este año del jubileo de la esperanza. Tenemos dos sitios hermosos para peregrinar en nuestra Diócesis de Sioux City- la Gruta de la Redención en West Bend y Trinity Heights en Sioux City. 

De hecho, para quienes no pueden viajar lejos, una visita a nuestra propia iglesia puede ser un peregrinaje de esperanza, en el que presentamos al Señor nuestra esperanza, sueños, miedos y la carga del mundo. Les animo a participen en cualquier tipo de peregrinación en los próximos meses, y a ofrecerse al Señor con la confianza de que su regalo no será en vano. El Señor siempre nos recibe generosamente y nos da mucho más de lo que esperamos. 

Soy un gran fan de las ferias del condado y, con frecuencia, pasaba tiempo en la feria del condado de Mahoning en Canfield, Ohio, cerca de mi hogar. Gracias al padre Michael Erpelding y los miembros de la parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción en Moville, parte de la parroquia de San Isidro y Sata María, por su hospitalidad y por el excelente pie que disfruté en el puesto parroquial en la feria del condado, cuando fui a visitar el ganado en las caballerizas y la exhibición de tractores.  

También quiere recordarles de la última Misa de bienvenida como obispo en nuestra diócesis, una oportunidad para encontrarme con ustedes. He disfrutado de la Misa de bienvenida que celebré en Fort Dodge en junio y en Storm Lake en julio donde tuve la oportunidad de conocer a muchos files de nuestra diócesis: hombres y mujeres, jóvenes y mayores. 

Si no ha tenido la oportunidad de acompañar a otros miembros de la iglesia diocesana, por favor considere acompañarnos este próximo martes, 12 de agosto, en la Catedra de la Epifanía, en Sioux City, a las 5:30 pm. Inmediatamente después de la Misa, tendremos una recepción con comida étnica, música, y bailes típicos, por miembros de la comunidad parroquial de Catedral. 

Finalmente, por favor recuerde que este próximo viernes, 15 de agosto, es la Solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, día de precepto. Esta importante solemnidad es, en muchos sentidos, la celebración de nuestra esperanza como cristianos, un recordatorio de la gloria que nos espera como miembros fieles de Dios, al celebrar que nuestra Santísima Madre María fue asunta a los cielos en cuerpo y alma, donde ella goza de la presencia permanente de Dios e intercede por nosotros.
