Peter's Pence collection June 28 and 29

(bilingual) Bishop John Keehner issued a letter to the faithful in support of the Holy Father's Peter's Pence collection, which the diocese will take up in parishes the weekend of June 28 and 29 at Masses.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Throughout centuries of history, Catholics have supported the Church’s mission of evangelization and charity by giving to the annual Peter’s Pence Collection. This collection, which began as a way for Catholics around the world to express their unity with the Pope, continues to the present day, including this year when we support our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

This tangible expression of unity with the Holy Father has a dual-purpose set by the Holy See to:

1. support the Holy Father’s mission, which extends throughout the entire world, from the proclamation of the Gospel to the promotion of integral human development, education, peace, and brotherhood among peoples: thanks also to the many activities of service carried out by the dicasteries, bodies and organs of the Holy See that assist him every day; and
2. support the numerous charitable works in aid of people and families in difficulty, populations afflicted by natural disasters and wars, or who need humanitarian assistance or support for development.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

A lo largo de los siglos de la historia, los católicos han apoyado la misión de evangelización y caridad de la Iglesia apoyando a la colecta anual del Óbolo de San Pedro. Esta colecta, que comenzó como una forma para que los católicos de todo el mundo expresan su unidad con el Papa, continúa hasta el día de hoy, incluso este año cuando apoyamos a nuestro nuevo Santo Padre, el Papa León XIV.

Esta expresión tangible de unidad con el Santo Padre tiene un doble propósito establecido por la Santa Sede:

1. Apoyar la misión del Santo Padre, que se extiende por todo el mundo, desde el anuncio del Evangelio hasta la promoción del desarrollo humano integral, de la educación, de la paz y de la fraternidad entre los pueblos: gracias también a las numerosas actividades de servicio llevadas a cabo por los dicasterios, cuerpos y órganos de la Santa Sede que le asisten cada día; 
2. Apoyar las numerosas obras de caridad en ayuda de personas y familias en dificultades, poblaciones afectadas por desastres naturales y guerras, o que necesitan ayuda humanitaria o apoyo para el desarrollo.
