Council 2326 of the Knights of Columbus from St. Mary’s Catholic Church is answering the call in these uncertain times of food insecurity. Once again, the Knights are proving that small efforts can lead to big impacts for the local community. The council has been collecting redeemable aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass from residents and businesses across the area, recycling them, and turning the proceeds into community donations.
“We know there is a need in our community and we want to help,” said Grand Knight Alex Berry. “Every can or bottle adds up, and the money goes right back into helping our community.”
Collection bins are set up in both Hy-Vee and Fairway parking lots and near L&G products on the east side of Storm Lake. These three locations make it easy for residents and visitors to contribute their clean, redeemable cans and bottles. The Knights collect year-round.
The Knights of Columbus Council voted to provide $500 to Upper Des Moines Opportunity, a local non-profit providing a broad range of services to the local area. The donation will help the organization continue to provide food assistance for families in need in Buena Vista County.
Sherri Nelsen, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, thanks the community for its ongoing support and remains committed to providing valuable services to the community and building a hopeful future for Storm Lake area residents. To donate, visit www.udmo.com/donate/ or mail to UDMO, 620 Michigan St., Storm Lake, IA 50588.
The Knights of Columbus recently voted to give monetary donations to a number of other local entities and are always looking for more groups and organizations to support. Please consider donating your redeemable cans and bottles to the designated collection sites and filling out a support grant application by scanning the QR.
