T.J. Schneider, member of Ascension Parish is hosting the fourth annual Extreme Way of the Cross for men this Lent. The rugged 6-mile hike starts in Madrid at 8:30 p.m. on March 27, just prior to the Palm Sunday weekend. It will conclude with Mass at St. Malachy Church at midnight.
All priests, men and any sons capable of making the hike are encouraged to participate.
“Join us as we carry our crosses and pray the Stations of the Cross and the rosary along the way,” from the event poster.
Schneider said in the past, the hike was held on Good Friday, which did not allow for including Mass as part of the event. The Lenten Friday does allow participants to attend Mass after the hike.
Most participants will probably complete the hike in about three hours, Schneider predicts. The men will meet at St. Malachy and then carpool to the hike’s starting point.
“We recommend that participants bring hiking shoes (some of the route is through the woods and a very small portion is fairly steep), appropriate attire for the forecasted weather that evening, water, and any sustenance they might need for the hike,” he said.
