The Sisters of Saint Francis, Dubuque, were among more than 100 religious organizations and individuals throughout the United States to submit art, prayers, poems, reflections, meditations, liturgies, music, videos and youth/adult programs to Catholic Climate Covenant. The sisters’ material is included in a new resource called Spreading Seeds of Peace and Hope for Creation that gives parishes and individuals assistance in their efforts to care for the environment.
“This attractive user-friendly site could be used by individuals in their private prayer, by organizations looking for prayer to begin their meeting, by parishes setting up sessions of adult classes, by liturgists selecting prayers and by faith formation programs wanting to teach students about care of the environment," said Sister Janice Hoffman, formerly of Cherokee Immaculate Conception Parish. The sisters’ portion of this resource includes the storytelling project created by their Laudato Si Committee with links to their webpage providing numerous writings and videos, four prayers by Sister Kathleen Grace as well as writings by Associate Michelle Watters, Sisters Charmaine Plotz, Jan Hrubes, Virginia Jennings, Arlene Smith, Karla Kloft, Mary Assumpta Glaser, Michelle Balek and Veronica Walsh.
Sister Nancy Miller pointed out that the “Storytelling project is an avenue to convey the beauty of creation and the danger of climate change which touches the heart and the mind.” The Catholic Climate Covenant organization’s mission is to inspire and equip people and institutions to care for creation. Through 20 national partners it guides the U.S. church’s response to climate change by educating, witnessing, and offering resources.
