Here is a brief overall of some of the activities to be held by Catholic schools throughout the diocese for this year’s Catholic Schools Week. The weeklong celebration runs Jan. 24-30 and includes a mix of activities ranging from spiritual to service and fun. This list is just a brief overview of activities planned for the week.
Bishop Garrigan Catholic Schools, Algona An all-school Mass with Bishop John E. Keehner will be held at 8:40 a.m. on Jan. 26 at St. Cecelia Church in Algona. There will be a community event in the Friedmann Auditorium on Jan. 28 to kick off the school’s capitol campaign. A Chamber Coffee will be held on Jan. 29 at 9:30 a.m. in the library.
Sacred Heart School, Boone Jan. 26 is McTeacher Night at the Boone McDonald’s from 5 to 7 p.m. On Jan. 28 an All-School Mass will be celebrated at Noon on Jan. 29, adoration will be at 2:45 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
Kuemper Catholic Schools, Carroll Junior and senior high school students will participate in Trivia/Winter Olympics on Jan. 26 and an all-school Mass will be held on Jan. 27. The TK-3rd grade students will and Donuts with Dad on Jan. 28 along with a Battleship Tournament. With a focus on vocations on Jan. 29, K-3 will pray a rosary, 4-6 will pray a living rosary in the gym and students in 7-12 will participate in eucharistic adoration.
Danbury Catholic The school will celebrate the community on Jan. 26 with a visit to nursing homes. They will go to St. Rose of Lima School in Denison on Jan. 28 for a retreat day. Students may dress like their hero or in red, white and blue on Jan. 29 and that day they will recite a Patriotic Rosary. Students will be bowling on Jan. 30.
St. Rose of Lima School, Denison Students will dress to celebrate their heritage on Jan. 27 and they will pray the rosary. They will join with Danbury Catholic for a retreat on Jan. 28 that will include a service project. It’s Bingo with Wesco on Jan. 29 and field trip to movie theater on Jan. 30.
Emmetsburg Catholic Bishop John Keehner will be visiting and celebrating Mass Jan. 26. On Jan. 29, the student council will host an all staff luncheon. Students will participate in a carnival on Jan. 30.
St. Mary School, Humboldt There will be a Mass Buddy Activity on Jan. 26, with fun activities in classrooms and no workshop that day. A volunteer prayer service will be featured on Jan. 27. Bishop John E. Keehner will visit the school on Jan. 29. An all-school Mass is set for Jan. 30 with a Catholic Game show also featured that day.
Gehlen Catholic School, Le Mars The students were asked to wear uniforms to the weekend Masses on Jan. 24 and 25. On Jan. 27, the faculty and staff will be given breakfast treats and lunch. A family picnic will be held on Jan. 28 at noon and Jan. 30 will feature a religion be for 5th-8th graders and afternoon games and activities for all students.
Pocahontas Catholic The children and staff on Jan. 26 will go to the Rialto to watch the movie "David." Thursday is the annual Yummy Carnival and Fundraiser. Profits are donated to a local cause. On Jan. 30, the liturgy is moved to 10 a.m. The children will sit with their family and then all come back for a brown bag lunch.
St. Mary’s Schools, Remsen On Jan. 27 it will be a casual dress day for students and will feature no homework. Also that day will be an elementary school retreat. Fifth grade students will be part of the World Mission Rosary at 11 a.m. on Jan. 28. Mass with Bishop Keehner will be celebrated at 8:15 a.m. on Jan. 30.
Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, Sioux City A Mass for all Bishop Heelan Catholic School students in K-12 will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 27 at Bishop Heelan High School. Bishop Heelan High School – On Jan. 26, students will participate in a Diaper Drive for Mary’s Choice with door decorating. There will be a student breakfast on Jan. 28 with Jeans Day as well as a school-wide scavenger hunt. Other activities during the week include writing thank you to their parents for the gift of Catholic education, an all-school rosary and visit to grade school campuses. Cathedral Dual Language Academy – Students will have donation drive for Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue and Hope Street of Siouxland on Jan. 26 as well as write letter to various community agencies such as fire and police departments. There will be a student breakfast on Jan. 28 and eucharistic adoration for 2-5 students. Other activities include relay races and rosary. Holy Cross School – Students will take up a collection of items for the Soup Kitchen and make thank you posters on Jan. 26. The Knights will serve students pancakes on Jan. 28 and rosary as well as skating is planned for Jan. 29. A family picnic will be highlight of Jan. 30. Mater Dei School – A collection for Lila Mae’s House will begin on Jan. 26. A vocation presentation for 5th-8th graders will be held on Jan. 27. A carnival for students in PK-5 – planned by 6-8 graders - will be held Jan. 29 following the all school Mass at 9:30 a.m. There will be a religion bowl on Jan. 30. Sacred Heart School – Students will collect items for the Hardy Hope Closet on Jan. 26 and will design door decorations for residents of Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Middle school students will go bowling on Jan. 28 and PK-5 grades will have movie time in the classrooms. School rosary and all-school Bingo are among other activities.
St. Patrick School, Sheldon A variety of activities are planned for the week including a Saint Scavenger Hunt, having dress up days such as wearing sports jerseys and having various opportunities for prayer.
Sacred Heart School, Spencer Parents are invited to a picnic lunch with the students on Jan. 28. Father Kevin Richter and Father David Hemann will make vocations presentations on Jan. 29 and student Mass on Jan. 30 will be celebrated by Bishop John E. Keehner. Also on Jan. 30, all school bingo will be held.
St. Mary’s School, Storm Lake On Jan. 26, St. Mary’s will thank parents with treats provided when they pick up students and cards from elementary/middle school students will thank them. It’s a free out of uniform day for students and staff on Jan. 27 with special activities for middle and high school students that morning. The focus of the day on Jan. 28 will be vocations with a gallery walk for elementary students throughout the day by Father Brent Lingle. Mass is at 8:30 a.m.
