Catholic funerals explained, misconceptions clarified - Funerales Católicos explicados

Catholics active in their faith attend Mass at least weekly and most have a good general knowledge regarding the ritual and what’s happening during the Sunday and/or daily liturgies. However, many may not have attended many Catholic funeral Masses and don’t realize what the church teaches about death and funerals. 
 
Having more knowledge about Catholic services and the theology behind them can help the faithful better understand the funeral Masses they attend and also plan a service for a loved one.
 
Father Andrew Galles, diocesan director of worship, offers some key teachings to help dispel myths and misconceptions regarding Catholic funerals including the purpose of the Mass and the church’s view of the body. He also explains the symbolism behind parts of the Catholic funeral rite.
 
‘The funeral is about ___’
“People think the funeral liturgy, the Mass of Christian Burial, is somehow for the living or is meant to be about the deceased. It is about the deceased as far as we are praying for their eternal salvation,” the priest said.
 
The faithful pray for the eternal salvation of the deceased during a funeral, Father Galles explained. Also, the purpose of the Mass is not to offer a eulogy - the funeral vigil is the proper venue for talking about the deceased at any length. 
 
“The primary driver of the liturgy of the funeral is to intercede as the people of God on behalf of the deceased,” the director of worship pointed out. “Obviously, the sacrifice of the Eucharist is the primary way through which we intercede for the dead in the Mass of the Christian Burial.”
 
This is demonstrated in the funeral prayers as outlined in the Roman Missal with language describing Jesus as a loving savior and merciful judge and praying that the sins of the deceased “be wiped away,” the priest added. 
 

Father Galles

“It really is intercessory. And we as the church, we as the people of God have a duty to pray for the dead and to intercede for the dead. So, we carry out our baptismal duty when we attend a funeral. Even if it is somebody we don’t know,” Father Galles said. “(Funerals) are open to the public because of this idea of the people of God, the Mystical Body of Christ, praying for the deceased, whoever it might be. That is something many people don’t understand.”

Paschal mystery focus
Christ’s paschal mystery – his suffering, death and resurrection – is the primary focus of any funeral rather than the life of the deceased, the priest stressed.
 
“We’re acknowledging that we’re celebrating the resurrection of Christ and the hope that it gives us. And we are acknowledging in the funeral liturgy that this person has been incorporated into that paschal mystery … what is truly celebrated is the pascal mystery, the resurrection of Jesus,” Father Galles said.
 
With the proper focus of the funeral liturgy, it aids the faithful and the clergy to ensure that appropriate readings and music are selected for the Mass. Selecting a secular song “because it represents the likes and interests of the deceased,” would not be appropriate for a funeral Mass as it “would not speak of the deceased’s life in Christ or Jesus and his pascal mystery.”
 
“The ritual books talk about how the music and the readings and everything of that nature are meant to have this kind of focus towards the paschal mystery of Christ; they are meant to recall the hope and resurrection of Christ. They’re meant to recall that even though suffering exists of course, and even though we are encountered with the suffering of death in this life, we have hope,” stressed the priest.
 
Sacred nature of the body
Respect for the body and the sacredness of the body in the church can be misunderstood. The director of worship pointed out that the secular culture’s view on death and honoring the dead can be in conflict to the church’s view.
 
“We recognize through the body, all of the mysteries of the faith were experienced through the sacraments,” he said. “We were washed and anointed with oil. We tasted the body and blood of Christ. So, we give great honor to that body that experienced those mysteries.”
 
The sacraments the body experienced are referenced in the funeral liturgy, including baptism. The priest will sprinkle the casket with holy water as the deceased was “washed in the waters of baptism.” He then covers it with a white pall, representing the baptismal garment.
 
“All of these things recall that person’s incorporation into the mystical body of Christ through baptism, confirmation and through the holy Eucharist … when the casket is put beneath the paschal candle, it’s a symbol that they belong to Christ. They have been incorporated into Christ into his church,” Father Galles said.
 
Cremation 
Cremation is an option that can be confusing to the faithful, although cremation is now permissible in the church. Because of the sacred nature of the body, the church prefers the deceased’s body to be present at the Mass rather than cremated remains.
 
Father Galles noted that cremation is not simply an option to be weighed in equal standing with burying an intact body. Having the body present in the church for a funeral is preferred.
 
“Although cremation is now permitted by the church, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body. The church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the church affirms in those rites,” from the Order of Christian Funerals. Read more here.
 
“You lose the rich symbology when you celebrate a Mass with simply cremains,” the priest added.
 
Catholics and Christians both find incensing of the body during the singing of the Saints of God to be a moving portion of the rite.
 
“One of the most beautiful moments in the funeral liturgy is when the priest incenses the body. There is a great sense of honor and dignity that’s given to that person at that moment,” he said. “It does not enjoy the same value when you have an urn of cremains there, but the body. There’s just something that is so much more profound when we have a casket there and we know that our loved one is inside.” 

The incensing is a moment when the liturgy is focused upon the deceased and “hopefully their victory with Christ over death,” Father Galles pointed out. 
 
Calling it a “powerful moment,” the incensing and singing the Saints of God is a point where all are praying for the intercession, asking that the angels usher the deceased “into the glories of paradise.”
 
Because of the view of the sacredness of the body, the church also does not permit the practice of keeping cremated remains in a residence, dividing up remains or depositing remains into jewelry or other vessels. 
 
“The church would see that as a fundamental disrespect of the body because the body itself is not a token that is kept on someone’s person or in their house. A body deserves a proper burial. It deserves proper rest given to it. It deserves to be placed until the second coming on hallowed ground,” the priest explained.
 
Preparing for a funeral
Whether preplanning one’s own funeral or planning for a recently deceased loved one, it’s helpful to know the theology and teaching of the church regarding death and sacredness of the body. The best resource for planning any Catholic funeral is the parish priest, who is trained in the church theology and liturgy to prepare for a fitting Mass and burial for members of the faithful.
 
As the time of death of a loved one can be a stressful time, the director of worship suggested that family members don’t have to take on the responsibility of liturgy details such as music and readings. He advises some families that it’s okay to turn the job over to the priest and parish staff to take care of those details.
 
The church provides the faithful with the Catholic funeral Mass, a fitting service to honor the deceased and their life in Christ, as well as celebrating the hope Christ’s death and resurrection offers to all.
 
“Trust the liturgy to do what it does … because the church has been doing it for hundreds upon hundreds of years,” Father Galles said. “The church knows how to speak to the human heart. The church is an expert in human nature, and so anything that we try to come up with is never going to be better than what the church has to offer us.”

Misterio Pascual

"Estamos reconociendo que estamos celebrando la resurrección de Cristo y la esperanza que nos da. Y estamos reconociendo en la liturgia fúnebre que esta persona ha sido incorporada a ese misterio pascual... lo que se celebra verdaderamente es el misterio pascual, la resurrección de Jesús", dijo el padre Galles.

Con el enfoque adecuado de la liturgia fúnebre, ayuda a los fieles y al clero a asegurarse de que se seleccionen las lecturas y la música apropiadas para la Misa. Seleccionar una canción secular "porque representa los gustos e intereses del difunto", no sería apropiado para una Misa de funeral, ya que "no hablaría de la vida del difunto en Cristo o de Jesús y su misterio pascual".

Naturaleza sagrada del cuerpo
El respeto por el cuerpo y la sacralidad del cuerpo en la iglesia puede ser malinterpretado. El director de adoración señaló que el punto de vista de la cultura secular sobre la muerte y el honor a los muertos puede estar en conflicto con el punto de vista de la iglesia.

"Reconocemos que, a través del cuerpo, todos los misterios de la fe fueron experimentados a través de los sacramentos", dijo. "Fuimos lavados y ungidos con aceite. Probamos el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo. Por lo tanto, le damos un gran honor a ese cuerpo que experimentó esos misterios".

Los sacramentos que experimentó el cuerpo se mencionan en la liturgia funeraria, incluido el bautismo. El sacerdote rociará el ataúd con agua bendita, así como el difunto fue "lavado en las aguas del bautismo". Luego lo cubre con una manta blanca, que representan las vestimentas bautismales.

Cremación 
La cremación es una opción que puede ser confusa para los fieles, aunque la cremación ya es permitida en la iglesia. Debido a la naturaleza sagrada del cuerpo, la iglesia prefiere que el cuerpo del difunto esté presente en la Misa en lugar de los restos cremados.
El padre Galles señaló que la cremación no es simplemente una opción igualitaria al entierro de un cuerpo intacto. Es preferible tener el cuerpo presente en la iglesia para un funeral.
"Aunque la cremación ahora está permitida por la iglesia, no goza del mismo valor que el entierro del cuerpo. La Iglesia claramente prefiere y exhorta a que el cuerpo del difunto esté presente para los ritos funerarios, ya que la presencia del cuerpo humano expresa mejor los valores que la Iglesia afirma en esos ritos", de la Orden de los Funerales Cristianos. "Se pierde la rica simbología cuando se celebra una misa simplemente con cenizas", agregó el sacerdote.

Tanto los católicos como los cristianos consideran que el incensar del cuerpo durante el canto de los Santos de Dios es una parte conmovedora del rito.

"Uno de los momentos más bellos de la liturgia fúnebre es cuando el sacerdote inciensa el cuerpo. Hay un gran sentido de honor y dignidad que se le da a esa persona en ese momento", dijo. "No goza del mismo valor cuando tienes allí una urna de cenizas, que el cuerpo. Hay algo que es mucho más profundo cuando tenemos un ataúd y sabemos que nuestro ser querido está adentro".

El incienso es un momento en el que la liturgia se centra en el difunto y "ojalá su victoria con Cristo sobre la muerte", señaló el padre Galles. 

Llamándolo un "momento poderoso", el incensar y cantar a los Santos de Dios es un punto en el que todos están orando por la intercesión, pidiendo que los ángeles lleven al difunto "a las glorias del paraíso".

Debido a la visión de la sacralidad del cuerpo, la iglesia tampoco permite la práctica de mantener los restos cremados en una residencia, dividir los restos o depositar los restos en joyas u otras vasijas. 

"La iglesia vería eso como una falta de respeto fundamental al cuerpo porque el cuerpo en sí no es una insignia que se guarda en la persona de alguien o en su casa. Un cuerpo merece un entierro adecuado. Merece que se le dé un descanso adecuado. Merece ser colocado en tierra sagrada hasta la segunda venida", explicó el sacerdote.

Preparación para un funeral
Ya sea que planifique con anticipación su propio funeral o se planifique para un ser querido recientemente fallecido, es útil conocer la teología y la enseñanza de la iglesia con respecto a la muerte y la santidad del cuerpo. El mejor recurso para planificar cualquier funeral católico es el párroco, quien está capacitado en la teología y la liturgia de la iglesia para prepararse para una Misa y un entierro adecuados para los fieles creyentes.

Como el momento de la muerte de un ser querido puede ser un momento estresante, el director de culto sugirió que los miembros de la familia no tienen que asumir la responsabilidad de los detalles litúrgicos, como la música y las lecturas. Aconseja a algunas familias que está bien dejar el trabajo en manos del sacerdote y del personal de la parroquia para que se encarguen de esos detalles.

"Confía en que la liturgia haga lo que hace... porque la iglesia lo ha estado haciendo durante cientos y cientos de años", dijo el padre Galles. "La Iglesia sabe hablar al corazón humano. La iglesia es una experta en la naturaleza humana, por lo que cualquier cosa que tratemos de inventar nunca va a ser mejor que lo que la iglesia tiene para ofrecernos".
