Bishop's letter for the 2025 Jubilee Year

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
 
Please join with me in celebrating the Jubilee Year called by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in which we commemorate the 2,025^th year of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bull of Indiction published by Pope Francis for the 2025 Jubilee is entitled Spes non confundit, which translates to “hope does not disappoint.” 

From this proclamation comes the spiritual theme of this year’s jubilee, “Pilgrims of Hope.” Embracing the theological virtue of hope, we as Catholics journey as pilgrims in this world towards our heavenly homeland to dwell in that beautiful communion of the Holy Trinity, where “night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light” (Rev 22:5). 
 
It is my sincere desire that this Jubilee Year might kindle and strengthen in our hearts the unbreakable hope that is wrought by the salvation won by Christ Jesus. Truly, through his suffering, death, and resurrection, our Lord has brought glad tidings to the poor, proclaimed liberty to captives, recovered the sight of the blind, let the oppressed go free, and has proclaimed a year acceptable to the Lord (Is 61: 1-3). 

This 2025 Jubilee Year is a year of the Lord’s favor in which we may focus ever more intently on pilgrimage, prayer, and penance. These three elements will help us renew and focus more intently on our spiritual life, so that we may gaze with ever greater devotion into the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus and more easily recognize his divine face in our neighbor.

 Pope Francis opened the Jubilee Year on December 24, 2024, with opening the Holy Door at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Locally, the Diocese of Sioux City will officially open the Jubilee Year with a Mass celebrated at the Cathedral of the Epiphany at 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 26. The Jubilee Year will conclude on January 4, 2026, on our Cathedral’s patronal feast, the Solemnity of the Epiphany. 
 
For the Diocese of Sioux City, I have designated four pilgrimage sites for the Jubilee Year: Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Queen of Peace Shrine in Sioux City, Grotto of the Redemption Shrine with Saints Peter and Paul Church in West Bend, and Saint Joseph Church in Milford. Laity, clergy, and religious, all of whom constitute “Pilgrims of Hope,” will be able to obtain the Jubilee indulgence granted by the Holy Father if, either individually or in a group, they devoutly visit one of the Jubilee churches of pilgrimage in our diocese during this Holy Year, and “for a suitable period of time, engage in Eucharistic adoration and meditation, concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, and invocations to Mary, the Mother of God, so that in this Holy Year everyone will come to know the closeness of Mary, the most affectionate of mothers, who never abandons her children.” 

These pilgrimage sites, along with this renewed emphasis on Eucharistic adoration and the Sacrament of Penance, constitute my vision for firmly rooting our diocese in the Lord as pilgrims of hope. Embracing these opportunities offered for pilgrimage, prayer, and penance will fill the hearts of the faithful with hopeful assurance of God’s promises to bring mercy and healing.
 
Let us pray for one another as we embark upon this pilgrimage of hope together as one Church, united in one faith and one Lord. May the intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace, and Saint Joseph, Protector of Holy Church, draw us ever closer to Jesus Christ.

 Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Por favor, únanse a mí para celebrar el Año del Jubileo convocado por nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, en el que conmemoramos 2, 025 años de la Encarnación de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. La Bula de Convocación publicada por el Papa Francisco para el Jubileo de 2025 se titula Spes non confundit, que se traduce como "la esperanza no defrauda". 

De esta proclamación viene la temática espiritual del jubileo de este año, "Peregrinos de esperanza". Abrazando la virtud teologal de la esperanza, nosotros, como católicos, caminamos como peregrinos en este mundo hacia nuestra patria celestial para habitar en esa hermosa comunión de la Santísima Trinidad, donde “Ya no habrá noche, no recitaran luz de lámpara ni del sol, porque el Señor Dios los alumbrara” (Ap. 22:5) 
 
Deseo sinceramente que este Año del Jubilo encienda y fortalezca en nuestro corazón la esperanza inquebrantable que es forjada por la salvación conquistada por Cristo Jesús. En verdad, a través de su sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección, nuestro Señor ha traído la buena nueva a los pobres, ha proclamado la libertad a los cautivos, ha recobrado la vista del ciego, ha dejado libres a los oprimidos y ha proclamado un año agradable al Señor (Is 61, 1-3). 

Este Año del Jubileo 2025 es un año de gracia del Señor en el que podemos centrarnos cada vez más en la peregrinación, la oración y la penitencia. Estos tres elementos nos ayudarán a renovar y a centrarnos más intensamente en nuestra vida espiritual, para que podamos contemplar con cada vez mayor devoción el Corazón Eucarístico de Jesús y reconocer más fácilmente su rostro divino en nuestro prójimo.

El Papa Francisco inauguró el Año del Jubileo el 24 de diciembre de 2024, con la apertura de la Puerta Santa de la Basílica de San Pedro en Roma. A nivel local, la Diócesis de Sioux City abrirá oficialmente el Año del Jubileo con una Misa celebrada en la Catedral de la Epifanía a las 10 a.m. el domingo 26 de enero. El Año del Jubileo concluirá el 4 de enero de 2026, en la fiesta patronal de nuestra Catedral, la solemnidad de la Epifanía. 

Para la Diócesis de Sioux City, he designado cuatro lugares de peregrinación para el Año del Jubilo: la Catedral de la Epifanía en Sioux City, Queen of Peace Shrine (Santuario de Reina de la Paz) en Sioux City, Redemption Shrine (el Santuario de la Gruta de la Redención) con la Iglesia de los Santos Pedro y Pablo en West Bend, y la Iglesia de San José en, Milford. Recemos los unos por los otros mientras nos embarcamos juntos en esta peregrinación de esperanza como una sola Iglesia, unida en una sola fe y un solo Señor. Que la intercesión de María, Reina de la paz, y de san José, protector de la Santa Iglesia, nos acerque cada vez más a Jesucristo.
