          Why is tonight different from every other night?    This is the night when we celebrate the Passover of the Lord.  We celebrate our freedom and the hand of God which delivered us from death and slavery to sin.

          This is the night when we celebrate that we are children of the light—children of the promise—children of a hope borne of a sorrow beyond all telling in the death of our savior upon a cross of wood.

          This is the night when we celebrate that God shares his life with us through signs and wonders—through the gift of creation—through the words of the prophets—through the pouring of water for the forgiveness of sins, through the anointing with perfumed oil and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, through bread that is broken and wine that is poured out which become the Body and Blood of the Lord, broken and blood poured out for us on the cross.

          This is the night when we celebrate the triumph of love over hatred and sin, of light over darkness, of hope over despair, of life over death.  

In Christ Jesus we have died.  In Christ Jesus we have all carried the wood of the cross and felt its weight upon our shoulders.  But in Christ Jesus, we have also risen to new life—a life over which death has no power—a life which springs eternal as hope.

          Christ died for our sins, once and for all.  And Christ is risen from the dead.  And so we have reason to rejoice.  As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, let us live the hope that we profess.  Let us be as the paschal candle, shining through the darkness of this night as a beacon to all the world proclaiming the life of Christ which lives in each of us, the life of Christ which has transformed us into a new creation, the life of Christ which compels us to change the world around us by one thing alone—the power of his love.

          ¿Por qué esta noche es diferente a todas las demás? Esta es la noche en que celebramos la Pascua del Señor. Celebramos nuestra libertad y la mano de Dios que nos libró de la muerte y de la esclavitud del pecado.

          Esta es la noche en que celebramos que somos hijos de la luz, hijos de la promesa, hijos de una esperanza nacida de un dolor indescriptible en la muerte de nuestro salvador en una cruz de madera. 

Esta es la noche en que celebramos que Dios comparte su vida con nosotros mediante señales y prodigios, mediante el don de la creación, mediante las palabras de los profetas, mediante el derramamiento del agua para el perdón de los pecados, mediante la unción con aceite perfumado y la invocación del Espíritu Santo, mediante el pan partido y el vino derramado que se convierten en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor, partido y derramado por nosotros en la cruz.

Esta es la noche en que celebramos el triunfo del amor sobre el odio y el pecado, de la luz sobre la oscuridad, de la esperanza sobre la desesperación, de la vida sobre la muerte.
En Cristo Jesús hemos muerto. En Cristo Jesús todos hemos llevado el madero de la cruz y sentido su peso sobre nuestros hombros. Pero en Cristo Jesús, también hemos resucitado a una nueva vida, una vida sobre la cual la muerte no tiene poder, una vida que brota eternamente como esperanza.

Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, de una vez por todas. Y Cristo resucitó de entre los muertos. Por eso tenemos motivos para regocijarnos. Al celebrar la resurrección de Cristo, vivamos la esperanza que profesamos. Seamos como el cirio pascual, brillando en la oscuridad de esta noche como un faro para todo el mundo, proclamando la vida de Cristo que vive en cada uno de nosotros, la vida de Cristo que nos ha transformado en una nueva creación, la vida de Cristo que nos impulsa a cambiar el mundo que nos rodea con una sola cosa: el poder de su amor.
