A Pocahontas Catholic School third grade student is encouraging reading in his classroom by sharing his favorite books with classmates.

Partners for Patriots dogs-in-training have been on the Briar Cliff University campus to help students and staff de-stress. In turn, the students are assisting the non-profit organization, based in Anthon.

The Cash Raffle winners were announced on Facebook Live on Nov. 27.

Bill Crotty was 15 years old when he started playing the pipe organ for Mass at Resurrection of Our Lord Church in Pocahontas. He is pleased to now help the next generation of organists get a start. The parishioner of St. Sebastian Parish of Pocahontas taught in Phoenix for nearly 30 years and substitute taught in Indiana for a time before returning to his hometown and taking a job as the kindergarten teacher at Pocahontas Catholic.

Seventh graders of Mater Dei in Sioux City, under the watchful eye of Tara Koob, made tie pillows for Mater Dei's nursing home residents and home bound members.

Local author Nancy Marshall shared her story Mary Emma, Walk with PK-5th grade students at Storm Lake St. Mary's School. Principal Kate Swanson said, "It was fun for the students (which include two of her grandchildren) to hear about what inspired her to become an author, and the PK-2 students were graciously gifted a copy of her book as well."

Briar Cliff University celebrated the reopening of its newly renovated education classrooms on Nov.18, made possible through a generous $28,501 grant from Missouri River Historical Development and a matched gift from the estate of Genevieve Nachtman, a Briar Cliff alumna. The MRHD Agile Classroom Grant Education Space (Heelan Hall 119) and the Genevieve M. Nachtman Classroom (Heelan Hall 106) are designed to enhance teaching and technology skills, ensuring BCU’s education students are equipped to meet the demands of modern classrooms.

Gehlen Catholic honored military veterans with a powerful Veterans Day Prayer Service on Nov. 11 at 8:45 a.m. in the Beau Langel Memorial Gym. All veterans in the community and surrounding area were welcome to enjoy the program. The service included music, a Quilts of Valor presentation, and the recognition of the veterans on the Gehlen Catholic Honor Wall.

This week 31 Remsen St. Mary High School shop students headed to Sioux City for the day to make beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace Organization. These beds are for children between the ages of 3 to 17 in the Sioux City area.

A former electrical engineer is student teaching a variety of science courses at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City this semester. And a big bonus – she happens to be a Missionary Benedictine. Sister Sarah Elizabeth McMahon, OSB, is teaching Physical Science Principles, Honors Chemistry and Honors Physics at Bishop Heelan as she completes her bachelor’s degree in 7-12 science education at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska.

Briar Cliff University in Sioux City held its 8th Annual First-Generation College Celebration in the Heelan Atrium, bringing together students, faculty, and staff to honor the accomplishments of the University's first-generation students and recognize the dedication of first-generation faculty and staff.

Pocahontas Catholic celebrated Red Ribbon Week last week. On Oct. 30, the students had Tourist Day - Life is a Movie, be drug free. PCS janitor, Troy Bindel joined in the fun and dressed the part.

A picture-perfect day allowed students, parents and staff to tackle jobs inside and out for the annual Kuemper Service Day. Projects were completed around Carroll ast week, including at the Animal Rescue of Carroll, the Carroll Children's Museum and the Catholic churches and schools.
