Several dozen members of Mater Dei Parish boarded a travel bus for a trip to religious sites in South Dakota on Aug. 14.
The first stop was in Alexandria, South Dakota, to tour the Carmelite Monastery Chapel, the Fatima Family Shrine and St. Mary of Mercy Church.
On the return trip, the bus stopped in Sioux Falls for a tour of the St. Joseph Cathedral.
The final stop was at Falls Park, where the group wandered around the Falls of the Big Sioux River and gathered for some food.

The FIRE Foundation of Northwest Iowa has awarded $30,000 to Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools to fulfill the responsibilities of the Director of Student Services for the 2024-2025 school year. BHCS also received a $1,500 microgrant for staff to attend a learning disabilities conference. Holy Cross School received $1,775 for sensory tools and to initiate a service cart project for students.

Hoping to raise awareness about the plight of homelessness throughout the nation, Catholic Charities USA has organized a series of six advocacy forums in locations throughout the country.
One such gathering - Catholic Charities USA’s Advocacy Forum: Convening on Practical Solutions to Homelessness - was held Aug. 8 and 9 at Catholic Charities Twin Cities location in Minneapolis. Amy Bloch, executive director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Sioux City, attended that meeting.

When the Carroll Kuemper Knights faced the Sioux City Heelan Crusaders on the gridiron 50 years ago, the Knights were the big-time underdogs.
Russ Hoffman of Greene County, a member of the 1974 Kuemper football team, said Bishop Heelan was a 4A powerhouse at the time, dominating everyone they played.
“They were 50-point favorites over us. The game was said to be David against Goliath,” he said, recalling the Crusaders dressed 68 players and the Knights dressed 36.

There’s more to Father Brad Pelzel’s personal chalice than what meets the eye. The vessel is now a third-class relic, an object touched by a saint.
The gold-plated chalice was used by St. John Paul II for the pope’s private daily Mass on June 13, 2002. At the time, Father Pelzel was completing four years of seminary study at the Pontifical North American College in Rome and would remain in Rome another year to complete his graduate studies (licentiate) in sacred theology.
